NIAC is run by a Governing Committee made up of 9 members. The day to day operations are managed by CGI Insurance Business Services under the auspices of the NIAC Chairman and the Governing Committee.

Nicholas Smith, MA, CD, FCII, Chairman.
Attorney in Fact in Canada for Lloyd’s Underwriters, President, Lloyd’s Canada Inc.

Nicholas Smith was appointed Attorney in Fact in Canada for Lloyd’s Underwriters in June 2001 and President of Lloyd’s Canada Inc. upon its formation in December 2000

Mr. Smith joined the Corporation of Lloyd’s in London in 1998 as Regional Manager for Canada and the Caribbean and was seconded to the Montreal office of the Attorney in Fact in Canada for Lloyd’s Underwriters in 1999. Prior to joining Lloyd’s, Mr. Smith was an insurance broker in the UK and Canada, specializing in the arrangement of insurance and risk management programmes for professional firms. He is an officer in the Canadian Naval Reserve and has also worked on full time service with the Navy.

Mr. Smith was educated at Cambridge, McGill and London Universities and is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute and a Chartered Insurance Practitioner. He is a director of the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), Chair of its Regulatory Affairs Committee and a member of its Regulatory Improvement and Governance Improvement Committees. He is also a director of the Institute of Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR) and council member of the Eastern Division Council of the British Canadian Chamber of Trade and Commerce.

Lloyd’s Underwriters are leading property and casualty insurers in Canada, and wrote premiums of over $1.4 Billion in 2006. The Attorney in Fact acts as Lloyd’s Chief Agent, being primarily responsible for regulatory compliance and representational functions. Lloyd’s Canada Inc. provides a range of services in support of Underwriters’ business in Canada.

Dermot P. Murphy, MBA, FCIP, CRM, Manager.
Mr. Murphy brings a wealth of insurance experience to the senior management position of NIAC. His 22 years with the predecessor of the CGU Group, Commercial Union, provided ample training in both the Underwriting and Claims Management disciplines. Mr. Murphy is also currently the Vice President of CGI Insurance Business Services.

Colleen P. DeMerchant, FCIP, CRM, Assistant Manager.
Ms DeMerchant has been the Assistant Manager since 1997 providing the daily underwriting, general management and technical expertise of the pool. Prior to that she held various head office level positions of the Commercial Union for over 12 years. Her insurance career began in 1979 with a large insurance broker where her responsibilities included very complex commercial accounts.

John Honey, P. Eng., Specialists Engineering. Mr. Honey is contracted to NIAC to provide engineering support and inspection services as required. His extensive knowledge of nuclear power plants world wide brings excellent experience which is highly respected.
